Ryan Cordell was off to a rough start this season. Now the question is whether he'll have a chance to erase it.

In the third inning of Monday's game against Rochester, Cordell made a leaping attempt to catch a Kennys Vargas drive at the center field wall and injured himself in the process.

Cordell jammed his right arm into the wall, and he couldn't use it to get to his feet. On the warning track, the trainer appeared to be rotating his arm as to attend to his shoulder. He walked off the field, left arm swinging normally, and his right arm remaining stationary.

Cordell had struck out in his only plate appearances of the game, giving him 17 over his first 40 on the season with the Knights. He's hitting just .132/.150/.184, so he hadn't yet positioned himself for an imminent call-up. That was a disappointing development considering his strong spring put him in contention for an early promotion. For the time being, the more immediate concern is whether he'll return to any field in the near future.

Before Cordell went down, the biggest injury news was Kevan Smith starting his rehab stint with the Knights. He's likely to remain in Charlotte after coming off the DL, but using a rehab stint allows the Sox to avoid burning an option until they have to.
