With instant replay, the longer it takes, the less likely it seems like the challenge will work.
With elbow injuries, it's the opposite. The longer the White Sox went without disclosing the details of Dane Dunning's injury, the more likely it was that he wouldn't need surgery, at least immediately.
Sure enough, the White Sox are going to try going the rest-and-recover route.
Dane Dunning was examined today in Chicago by Team Physician Dr. Nik Verma. An MRI revealed that Dunning suffered a moderate elbow sprain that presently will not require surgery. Dunning will be placed on the DL at Birmingham and begin a 6-8 week program of rest and rehab.

Dunning will begin a throwing program afterward, with the hope that he can return to pitching before the end of the season, or maybe the Arizona Fall League.
The good news is that the White Sox had a deserving starter to promote to Birmingham in his place. With Dunning on the disabled list, Jimmy Lambert gets the chance to ply his trade with the Barons. The 2016 fifth-round pick posted a 3.95 ERA with 80 strikeouts over 71 innings with the Dash. He had a rough patch in early June, but responded with three strong starts, going eight innings in his last two, and striking out 11 his most recent time out.
