2020 MLB Draft: Team USA Players to Watch

In Cary, North Carolina the Collegiate USA squad is scrimmaging against each other preparing for this Summer's schedule. Their schedule begins on July 2nd against Cuba in Charlotte, and the journey will take them to Taiwan and Japan. Playing for Team USA is always an excellent opportunity to see how the top College players in next year's draft class will perform against a different level of competition and using wood bats.

There are plenty of names to watch in July who are already getting first round buzz.

Pitchers to Watch

    • Asa Lacy Lacy has a four-pitch mix that helped him strikeout 130 batters in 88.2 innings this season.
    • Cole WilcoxStumbling late in the season, maybe a break in the action will help Wilcox during the USA circuit to once again display his 60-grade fastball. The changeup continues to improve, but it's his slider that needs more refinement.
    • Reid Detmers2019 has already been a long season the southpaw from Louisville who helped the Cardinals reach the College World Series. With every start, Detmers will get an opportunity to prove that he's as good as the other pitchers receiving the first-round buzz.
    • Garrett CrochetOften overshadowed in the SEC, but Crochet should not be overlooked. It'll be interesting to see if Crochet comes out of the bullpen or gets some starts this summer.

Hitters to Watch

    • Spencer TorkelsonAndrew Vaughn was selected third overall, and Torkelson might be worthy of being selected as high as his Pac-12 rival. The key differences between the two are that Vaughn has better contact skills, but Torkelson has more power in his swing with some grading him as 70-grade power.
    • Austin MartinOne of the spark plugs in Vanderbilt's National Championship run; Martin will be moved around the diamond displaying his position flexibility and set the table leading the offensive attack. One of the more balanced players in this upcoming draft class.
    • Patrick BaileyTrying to follow in the footsteps of Joey Bart and Adley Rutschman, NC State's Bailey is the highest ranked catcher in the upcoming draft class. If he can flex some power with the wood bat, it could go a long way in improving his already Top-10 draft stock.

Three of the 8th USA vs. Cuba International Friendship Series games will be streamed live on USABaseball.com and the remaining seven domestic Collegiate National Team’s games will be broadcasted on USA Baseball’s Facebook channel.
