Starting game one of a straight doubleheader, Dylan Cease was looking to duplicate his last start against the Mets when he pitched seven innings. Getting deep into the game would help manager Rick Renteria save some of the bullpen arms for the nightcap with Hector Santiago starting. It was also the second time this season Cease faced Detroit so it was an excellent opportunity how he'd handle a lineup that's seen him before.
Just like his MLB debut, Cease could only go five innings. Thanks to Jose Abreu and Welington Castillo, Cease got enough run support to pick up his second career win as the White Sox beat the Tigers, 5-3.
It only took three pitches for Tigers starter Daniel Norris to get two outs in the first inning. Facing Jose Abreu was a different story. In an eleven-pitch battle, Norris could not throw his fastball hard enough or get his slider to break in trying to miss Abreu's bat. On the final pitch, aiming to get Abreu to chase an outside corner fastball, Norris instead found the barrel as it traveled over the right field wall. Abreu's 24th home run of the season gave the White Sox an early 1-0 lead.

Abreu drove in his third RBI of the game in the ninth inning. After singles from Garcia and Anderson put runners on the corners, Abreu made it three singles in a row driving in his 81st RBI of the season. Up 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Renteria decided to have Alex Colome try to close the game despite pitching last night. After two quick outs, Colome gave up another run as Castro drove in Jones to make it 5-3, but Dixon grounded out to wrap up the game.
Game Notes:
- Jose Abreu was a triple shy of the cycle, but with the walk that already gives him three in August. He only had two walks in June and July.
- Two earned runs is the fewest allowed by Dylan Cease to date.
- White Sox are 7-3 against the Tigers in 2019
