The White Sox's highly touted prep pitchers have yet to translate their draft status into production, which is only disappointing because ít's way better to see young players doing cool things immediately. As it stands, Kannapolis was an ambitious assignment for players with such odd stutter-starts to their career, so it's not to odd to see Matthew Thompson, Andrew Dalquist and Jared Kelley all struggling to various degrees.
Thompson had at least one start to show that he's got the talent to hang in A-ball. Dalquist joined him on Thursday. Against a Carolina Mudcats team that served Dalquist his worst start to date back with five runs over the course of four outs on May 28, Dalquist recovered with his best-ever start. He shook off a first-inning unearned run for a career-high five innings, during which he allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out a career-high seven.
That one start accounts for more than a quarter of his season workload, as three of his starts lasted fewer than two innings, and he'd topped out at 3⅓ innings.
