Good morning!
Over on Monday morning's Sox Machine podcast, Josh and Jim discussed the wonderful news that is the Golden Era Committee voting Minnie Miñoso into the Baseball Hall of Fame. On a sadder note, the late, great Dick Allen missed his shot at induction by just one vote.
Allen, of course, was a tour de force with the White Sox from 1972-1974, and his MVP campaign in 1972 saw him post a league (and MLB)-leading 1.023 OPS. He's just the sixth White Sox player in franchise history to break the 1.000 OPS barrier and as Josh noted on the podcast, had a 199 OPS+ during that 1972 season. Just crazy!
Let's celebrate Dick Allen today, shall we? Today's Sporcle will task you with a slightly less lofty OPS requirement: in franchise history, 98 White Sox batters have logged an OPS of at least .850 while qualifying for the batting title. How many can you name? Good luck!
Quiz Parameters
- As noted above, to make the cut a player must have qualified for the batting title. That means Dylan Cease's brilliant 2021 OPS of .875 won't be on here.
- I've allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
- For hints, I've provided the season, OPS, and position of the player in question.
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:
- 7 player seasons on this list led the league in OPS.
- Player seasons to log 200+ hits? Also 7.
- 1 player season managed to make this list while hitting 0 home runs (1940, SS).
