Good morning!
We are nearing the conclusion of this mini-series of position examinations and have reached the last two non-pitcher playing positions on the field: catcher and designated hitter. Likely, you could quibble whether DH is a "playing position", I suppose, but it felt weird to not include them and besides, there are some great names for that position.
Catcher, while it has had turnover in the last several seasons, is still a relatively small number of names given its natural scarcity. Designated hitter, on the other hand, has seen quite a few names over the years as the team used that spot both to give guys a look as well as to get more-known players a breather from the field. Your strategy, then, for DH might be: consider both the nominal names (likely remembered from the other iterations of this series) as well as the major position players who saw just a game or two at that spot.
In all, this quiz has the most names seen thus far in the series: between catcher and designated hitter there are 95 entries. How many can you name? Good luck!
Quiz Parameters
- I've allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
- For hints, I've provided the season, position, and number of innings (C) or games (DH) appearing at that position.
Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:
- 2021 saw seven different players appear at designated hitter for just one game, while 2017 saw the fewest, with just one.
- There's not much disparity between the most catchers to appear in a season (5, 2018) and fewest (3, 2020).
