Whether you judge him from top-100 lists or farm system levels, Colson Montgomery isn't doing moving up.

Tamar Sher of 14 News in Evansville, Ind., reported on the latest promotion for the local boy making good.

If the White Sox kept Montgomery in Winston-Salem the rest of the year, I would've understood it. He's hitting .258/.387/.417 over 37 games for the Dash, and most impressive is his equal number of walks and strikeouts (26 apiece). Those numbers were front-loaded, as Montgomery's production has slowed in August (.200/.327/.375 over 50 plate appearances). He's been getting regularly days off, as it seems like the White Sox are targeting 100 games played this year, with Montgomery's at 82 and counting.

However, if the White Sox already know that Montgomery will be starting the 2023 season at Birmingham, then it makes some sense to give him some exposure to Double-A, just as José Rodríguez and Lenyn Sosa did the year before.

Montgomery has made all his defensive appearances at shortstop, so we'll have to see if the Sox will play him at other positions in Birmingham, or if José Rodríguez will have to move. Then again, Rodríguez sat for the Barons on Sunday, so perhaps he's earned his own promotion after an incredible power display in August.
