At one of the White Sox's darkest moments this year, they considered Anderson Severino a possible contributor to the major-league bullpen.
The idea didn't survive April, but even though Severino gave up five runs and six free bases (four walks, two HBPs) over 7⅓ innings, those two-plus weeks will remain the highlight of his season. There's the matter that it represents his first MLB experience, sure, but there's also everything else he's done this year.
I don't think I can recall somebody lasting a whole season at Charlotte with the numbers he's posted. He gave up five more runs in an inning of work in the Knights' 6-2 loss to Durham on Monday, which gives him this line:
G | IP | H | HR | BB | K | ERA | AVG/OBP/SLG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
36 | 29 | 37 | 6 | 41 | 33 | 11.79 | .308/.491/.542 |
Alec Hansen came close to it his last two seasons in Birmingham, but at least his control problems had a helpful byproduct of allowing fewer hits than innings pitched.
Now if you lower it to a partial season, you only have to look as far as Severino's teammates. Jason Bilous (10.71 ERA), Brody Koener (10.57) and Parker Markel (10.29) all have or had double-digit ERAs, and all pale in comparison to Tobias Myers, who is 0-6 with a 15.92 ERA and a 3.31 WHIP over seven starts. That makes for an opponent line of .418/.524/.791.
