Sporcle Saturday: Goodbye, José Abreu

(Photo by David Banks/USA TODAY Sports)

Good morning!

With the disappointing but not all that surprising news made official that José Abreu is now an Astro, a different White Sox will have to step up and be the Cuban face of the franchise. When Abreu departed, he left as the second-longest-tenured Cuban player in franchise history at 1,270 games played. That's just 103 games short of the leader and in half as many decades, to boot.

The next-longest-tenured Cuban White Sox sits at exactly half of Abreu's number: 635. Clearly, there's some work to be done to reach Abreu's lofty totals, whether we're talking games played or offensive production. While you have Abreu in hand, you'll need to test your knowledge of other Sox players with that Cuban connection. In all, 23 separate Cuban-born players have played with the White Sox: how many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I've allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I've provided the year(s) they were with the Sox and the position they played.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • The only positions truly underrepresented on this list are second base and right field (perhaps Oscar Colás will represent RF?).
  • The Cuban player with the most appearances in MLB history is Rafael Palmeiro with 2,831 games. For those curious, Abreu sits at 17th-most in MLB.
