Sporcle Saturday: Throwing a Maddux

White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease

(Kamil Krzaczynski/USA TODAY Sports)

Good morning!

Looking back at pitching performances for the 2022 White Sox staff, I am continually surprised when I remember that Dylan Cease had the White Sox' only complete game for the entirety of the season.

I'm not entirely sure why that tidbit continues to slip my mind; perhaps it's an unconscious effort on brain's part to memory-hole what was one of the most disappointing seasons of my lifetime, at least relative to the expectations entering 2022. At any rate, Cease actually came within just four pitches of throwing a Maddux. I'm sure you know, but in case you don't: that's a starting pitcher throwing a complete game shutout on fewer than 100 pitches.

In fact, the White Sox haven't had a starting pitcher throw a Maddux since 2015, nor an opponent throw one against them since 2016. Given league trends surrounding pitching and bullpen usage that's not all that surprising, I suppose; just two pitchers threw a Maddux during the 2022 season: Jordan Montgomery and Patrick Sandoval (three days apart in August, strangely enough). Still, I thought it might be fun for you to try your hand at naming those Madduxes(i?): in the pitch-counting era, eighteen pitchers have thrown one either for OR against the White Sox. How many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I've allotted 15 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I've provided the opponent and the score, and indicated whether it was for or against the White Sox.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • A bit of a hint, but in a strange twist of fate, the most recent pitcher to throw a Maddux against the White Sox is now a member of the current White Sox bullpen.
  • In the 2000s, Roy Halladay is the only pitcher to throw a Maddux in 10 innings.
