Sporcle Saturday: His ERA is what, now?

(Photo by Kim Klement/USA TODAY Sports)

Good morning!

Entering Friday evening's contest against the Tampa Bay Rays, two White Sox starters in Lance Lynn and Michael Kopech had ERAs that began with a "6" or a "7". Somewhere, Henry Chadwick rolled over in his (presumed) grave. Seems not good!

Of course, we're only the first weeks of the season and there's plenty of time to get those averages down into the respectable 3s and 4s. But, it did make me curious as to just how many White Sox starting pitchers went most or all of a season with an ERA above 5.

Turns out, 48 different guys! And that's what today's Sporcle is asking of you: throughout franchise history, which White Sox starting pitchers --starting a minimum of 20 games that season-- logged an ERA of 5 or greater? How many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I've allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints I've provided the year and the starter's ERA.
  • To reiterate, a starting pitcher qualifies if he made at least 20 starts in the season in which he recorded an ERA of at least 5.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Two starting pitchers on this list lost 20 games: 24 (1931) and 20 (1921).
  • The White Sox starter to lose the most games in a season in franchise history -25- didn't make this list. Why? Because he logged a respectable 3.74 ERA (3.36 FIP)!
  • The average ERA+ of the players on this list is 80.5. One pitcher did log a league-average ERA+ (101) in 1936.
