White Sox Minor Keys: April 15, 2023

Tyler Johnson, the right-handed reliever whose promising career was derailed by series of injuries, announced his retirement this past week due to "medical concerns."

Johnson certainly had his share of hardships. He lost the first half of 2019 with a lat strain, after which the Sox tried to alter his mechanics to lower the injury risk. After losing the entire 2020 season to the pandemic, Johnson returned to the mound in 2021 looking lost, and he eventually had season-ending knee surgery after issuing 19 walks over 22 innings.

The Sox then re-signed him for the 2022 season, but the early returns at Charlotte were even worse, and he spent the rest of the season on the injured list after another surgery.

Johnson, who was selected in the fifth round out of South Carolina in the 2017 draft, appeared to be on the fast track to the White Sox bullpen after 2018, when he went 9-0 with a 1.40 ERA and 14 saves while striking out 89 batters against 16 walks over 58 innings.
