White Sox Minor Keys: April 20, 2023

Truist Field (Laura Wolff / Charlotte Knights)

The Charlotte Knights made several roster moves on Friday. Chief among them: The Knights placed Jonathan Stiever on the injured list and Sean Burke on the development list. They also promoted Garrett Davila to Charlotte while releasing Ricardo Sanchez.

It's been years since Stiever has resembled the guy who shot up prospect rankings and stole a couple of starts in 2020. He had lat surgery at the end of 2021, and he didn't surface until the end of 2022. The early showings in 2023 haven't been encouraging, as Jeff Cohen said that Stiever was sitting 89-90 when he saw him. In between, he was outrighted from the 40-man roster.

Burke was placed on the development list, and it's a lot less clear what this means for somebody like him. The only other player on the development list in the White Sox organization is Daniel Millwee, but extra catchers often float around between the affiliates, and some who aren't rostered for long periods of time are serving as a bullpen catcher or helping other guys get work in.

Burke's situation is different because he just came off the injured list, and then he experienced control problems in the second inning of his only start. I imagine he'd head back to the injured list if he were injured, and you can rule out workload management because he's recorded all of five outs. Maybe the Sox saw something in his delivery that they want to correct sooner than later, which is the kind of project the open-endedness of the developmental list allows teams to undertake:

This seems like the kind of thing that spring training is for, but Burke only made one appearance during Cactus League play, and opened the year on the IL with a sore shoulder. We'll have to see how long he spends on the new DL, and what he looks like when he's back.
