With the Arizona Complex League season starting in a couple of weeks, it's always worth perusing the minor league transactions listings to see which players won't make it out of extended spring training.
Cam Butler was among the players released since the start of April, according to Baseball America.
Baseball America was why Butler was ever on my radar. He ranked a respectable 210th on BA's Top 500 that year, and the White Sox selected him in the 15th round in the 2021 draft, signing him for $150,000.
He was a bit of a mystery after dominating a small-school circuit in California, but his athleticism never transferred to professional ball, at least with the White Sox. He finished his debut year 4-for-48 with 27 strikeouts, and then improved to .201/.320/.292 with 71 strikeouts over 169 plate appearances. He won't get a chance for a third season with the Sox, partially because the elimination of advanced rookie leagues no longer allows a player like him one more year.
The White Sox also released Lincoln Henzman and Tyler Osik.
