Liam Hendriks made his first rehab stint on Friday night as he works his way back from non-Hodgkin lymphoma, pitching the seventh inning for the Charlotte Knights on the road against Gwinnett.
It started the way every inning starts, with a series of warm-up tosses. It ended in the way a lot of Hendriks' outings end, a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout on just nine pitches.
But he experienced a couple of delays along the way.
Between his last warm-up pitch and the first one that counted, the dugouts for both the Knights and the Stripers emptied to give Hendriks a standing ovation, along with the fans that were left in the stands during a misty night at Coolray Field.
And after struggling with his footing during the first batter, he had to take a minute to clean out his spikes as the grounds crew applied drying compound to the landing area.
It was business as usual otherwise. He induced a popout to the left side from Forrest Wall, locked up Joe Hudson on a 2-2 fastball on the inside corner, then got a first-pitch one-hop groundout from Eli White.
After the game, he said that the generosity displayed by Gwinnett threw him off his game.
