White Sox prospect Terrell Tatum

Terrell Tatum (Jim Margalus / Sox Machine)

I feel like there should really only be one prospect list revision during the year -- after the deadline to sign draft picks -- because the potential for in-season volatility should be baked into a prospect's initial outlook.

Nevertheless, I do enjoy the first of Baseball America's more frequent updates, just to see which players inspired panic in BA's Teams channels, for better or for worse. Here are the biggest shifts among White Sox prospects in both directions:

Going up

Jacob Burke (From off the list to 20th): Burke's season was delayed by, but he's reached base in every one of his 25 games this season, he's hitting,. and he's a real center fielder. If he figures out Winston-Salem by the end of the year, he might have another 10 spots in him.

PERTINENT: Jacob Burke is out to prove he will become a Major Leaguer center fielder

Terrell Tatum (24th to 13th): An amphetamine suspension interrupted his first full season, so this is the first time he's been able to give evaluators a look at how his late-blooming skill set holds up over an actual grind.

Loidel Chapelli (26th to 17th): This one feels off to me. He got off to a hot start, but he's hitting .233/.351/.390 on the year, and it's not fun to watch him play second base.

Ryan Burrowes (22nd to 14th): It's been such a rough year on the farm that a guy like Burrowes jumps eight spots before seeing any meaningful action.

Wilfred Veras (17th to 12th): Seems like you could place him ahead of Matthew Thompson at No. 11, but his aggressiveness at the plate and limitations in the field make it harder to get much more excited about him at this time. He's hitting .313/.342/.477 as a 20-year-old in Winston-Salem, so he's progressing nicely.

Going down

Norge Vera (eighth to 18th): I thanked Keith Law for ranking Vera 17th before the season, and his late-season problems in 2022 carried over into 2023.

Kohl Simas (13th to 23rd): This one surprised me because it didn't seem like he's been as bad as his 6.17 ERA would suggest, but BA says Simas "put on weight in the offseason and observers have seen his stuff go backwards.

Jonathan Stiever (21st to off the list): I was surprised he merited a number in the first place.

Yolbert Sánchez (23rd to off the list): He's somehow showing even less power in Charlotte this year, slugging .312.

Wes Kath (18th to 25th): He plays a decent third base, but he has a 41.5 percent strikeout rate with a .315 slugging percentage.
