Sporcle Saturday: Bunches of (extra) bases

Good morning!

It’s another week of Sporcle Saturday, and another week of celebrating something in Luis Robert, Jr.’s offensive profile. Entering play on Friday evening, Robert was tied for third-most extra base hits in MLB with 52, alongside Matt Olson. The only others ahead of him are Freddie Freeman (53) and some guy named Shohei Ohtani with 58.

I’d wager that’s pretty good, and worthy of recognition. Fingers crossed regarding health and all, but if he can maintain this pace he has a pretty good shot at recording the most extra bases by a White Sox in a season since 2017 (82 that year). And that’s what today’s Sporcle is all about: of the White Sox batters to record 60 or more XBHs in a season, how many can you name? In all there are 77 entries: good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints I’ve provided the season, number of XBHs, and position of the player in question.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • The single-season record holder in XBHs in MLB is Babe Ruth, with 119 recorded in 1921.
  • Among those players with 40 or more XBHs thus far this season, only Corbin Carrol (22 years old), Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis, Jr. are younger (both 24 years old).
  • The oldest player to record 70 or more XBHs in a season was 40-year-old David Ortiz, when he had 87(!) in 2016.
  • Bumping the floor down to 60 XBHs, Dave Winfield knocked 62 in 1992, also in his age-40 season.
