Jonathan Cannon parlayed his Futures Game appearance into a midseason promotion to Birmingham. He came back from the All-Star break as a member of the Barons and made his Double-A debut on Saturday night.
It was an unremarkable debut. He allowed three runs (two earned) over four innings, and every frame featured obstacles after a 1-2-3 first. Still, if he stays healthy, he'll get nearly two months at Double-A, which is the kind of thing that advances a major-league timetable to 2024 if enough goes well.
Meanwhile, Noah Schultz still hasn't been scored upon in 14⅓ professional innings, but he only added 2⅓ innings to his tab tonight despite setting a career high in pitches. He needed a couple of strikeouts to strand the bases loaded in the second, then opened the third with a couple of full counts. He gave up a single on his 51st pitch of the night to bring in the bullpen, but Ethan Hammerberg stranded the run to keep Schultz's tab clear for the season.
