White Sox Minor Keys: July 26, 2023

Regions Field in Birmingham (Jim Margalus)

The White Sox just acquired a catcher drawing a ton of walks at Double-A in Edgar Quero, even though they could've said they already have that guy at home.

Adam Hackenberg has been that guy lately, at least. He's quietly hitting .280/.386/.391 on the season for Birmingham, including a .292/.460/.479 line in July on the strength of 11 walks against 13 strikeouts over 63 plate appearances.

That's "quietly" for a couple reasons. He posted a sub-.700 OPS at Winston-Salem in 2022, and followed it up with a sluggish April. Also, he's a little lacking in the impact contact, with just 15 extra-base hits over 65 games, and while his arm isn't considered a negative, he's had an uphill battle between the runner-friendly rules and an underwater Barons pitching staff.

Still, he hadn't really defined himself in any way offensively before this season, so leading with improved plate discipline is an excellent choice. Also, Hackenberg played some first base on Wednesday, but that's because Luis Mieses injured his shoulder in a collision after a throw.
