I'm on the record of thinking midseason prospect ranking revisions often raise more questions than they answer outside of a few exceptions, like significant injuries (and returns from them), or re-slotting to account for the newest draft picks. Otherwise, any dramatic shifts over the course of two to three months mostly makes me wonder about the confidence of the evaluator.
Locally, I mentioned that it was weird seeing Kohl Simas drop from 13th to 23rd on Baseball America's White Sox prospects list after two unimpressive months. To me, that suggests that he shouldn't have been ranked 13th in the first place.
Korey Lee is an even stranger case, because he went from being ranked No. 7 on Baseball America's preseason list to No. 29 at the time of his trade to the White Sox, and in one of baseball's thinnest farm systems to boot. This year has exposed some potential flaws -- 75 strikeouts against just 17 walks in 302 plate appearances at Triple-A, a .160/.192/.240 line over 26 plate appearances in his first MLB stint with the Astros, and questions about his receiving -- but I'd expect a 22-spot drop on a list like Houston's to involve a prison sentence.
Scott Merkin says we'll get a look at him starting Tuesday, as Lee told him that he's past his oblique injury and "100 percent ready to rock."
