White Sox Minor Keys: July 4, 2023

Truist Field in Charlotte

(Laura Wolff / Charlotte Knights)

Colson Montgomery spent 10 games in the Arizona Complex League before getting promoted to Winston-Salem this week. Considering he'd missed the first 2½ months of the season with back injury, it didn't hurt the White Sox to be thorough. Considering he hit .353/.511/.588 with 11 walks in 10 games, they probably could've pulled the trigger a few days earlier, but maybe they didn't want to subject him to a cross-country flight and a six-hour bus drive.

Either way, Montgomery made his return to the Dash on Tuesday, and looked no worse for the wear and wait. He reached base five times without crossing the plate in Winston-Salem's 14-inning loss to the Hickory Crawdads. He singled three times in four at-bats during regulation, then was intentionally walked in both the 10th and 12th innings.

If there was any rust, it might've been in the field, as Montgomery committed errors in the ninth and 12th innings. He got eaten up by a bad hop on the first one, although he compounded the problem by trying to glove it backhand when he had time to square it up. The second one will make you think he's been watching too much Tim Anderson while rehabbing, because he rushed his actions trying to get a runner at home on a contact play hit right to him.

He also made a number of handful of fine plays, so maybe he's just not used to being on the field for four hours.
