Bullet-point recap:
*Luis Robert Jr. provided the game's only run with a ninth-inning solo shot off Josh Winckowski that couldn't possibly be hit anywhere else. He poked a fastball just off the plate just inside the Pesky Pole in right field. And by "right inside," I mean it bounced off a fan in the first row and caromed back into the field of play.
Statcast said it traveled 311 feet, and Fenway is the only park that would accommodate it in such a fashion. Boop.
*Aaron Bummer picked up the win against considerable odds, because he walked the first two batters of the eighth. Somehow he came back to strike out Justin Turner to find footing, after which Alex Verdugo flied out and Masataka Yoshida grounded out to first. Yoshida was 3-for-3 against Dylan Cease, so of course Bummer figured him out in high leverage.
*Bryan Shaw required the save with similar drama, as Benintendi checked up on Reese McGuire's flare to left field to put two on with two outs. He struck out Cedenne Rafaela to end the game.
*Cease got a no-decision for his best start of the season. He scattered six hits -- three by Yoshida -- while striking out 11 over seven innings.
*Cease dodged one bullet when Justin Turner's drive to left hit high off the Monster, and Benintendi played it well enough to cut down Turner at second with ease. That mattered when Masataka Yoshida doubled later in the inning, and Cease stranded him there.
*Otherwise, the threats were mostly minor, and Cease threw 72 of 108 pitches for strikes. He also passed 200 strikeouts for a third consecutive season.
*The daylong rain might've created favorable conditions for pitching, because Nick Pivetta was just as stout. He also threw seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out seven.
*The White Sox missed their best opportunity in the top of the fourth inning when they had runners on the corners following singles by Andrew Benintendi and Eloy Jiménez, but Yoán Moncada swung through a fastball for strike three, and Andrew Vaughn grounded to short.
*Lenyn Sosa was gunned down at second by Reese McGuire to cut short another potential rally.
*The White Sox were only 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position. The Red Sox were 0-for-10.
