Sporcle Saturday: Low WHIPs

Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Good morning!

If you look at the team page for the 2023 Chicago White Sox, you generally can pick a category at random and assume that such futility has not been seen in several seasons. And, indeed, take WHIP: the White Sox have had multiple relievers and/or starters (20 appearances, minimum) with a WHIP of 1 or below every season since 2019. You likely need no reminder that 2018 was the nadir of the most recent rebuild, and indeed, no pitcher recorded a WHIP to qualify in the aforementioned category.

Now, I'll grant you: Jace Fry's 1.11 WHIP in 2018 is certainly not bad. Nor is Kendall Graveman's 1.205 WHIP damning in 2023. But the expectations and storylines surrounding those individual teams were quite different! And so, when the average WHIP of all pitchers on the roster in 2023 was 1.415 compared to 1.431 in 2018, it kinda stinks.

Anywhoozle, the palate cleanser(?): today’s Sporcle will task you with naming great WHIP seasons in franchise history. I set the cut-off at 20 games and a WHIP of 1 or below. In all that’s 53 entries: how many can you name? Good luck!
