Sporcle Saturday: Happy birthday, Early Wynn

Good morning!

It was on this date in 1920 that one of the stalwarts of the 1959 White Sox rotation was born: Early Wynn. Wynn's career, of course, took place mostly away from Chicago: just five of his twenty-three years in MLB were with the White Sox, but what a five year run. A Cy Young award, three all-star selections, and 53 complete games out of 157 appearances overall! Oh, and as an aside, 64 of his 300 career victories came during this period, too.

If you're not too familiar with Wynn's history, SABR (as usual) has an excellent biography you can check out. I especially enjoyed this quote regarding his presence on the mound:

You take a look at the batter’s box, and part of it belongs to the hitter. But when he crowds in just that hair, he’s stepping into my office, and nobody comes into my office without an invitation when I’m going to work.

Red Smith, Red Smith on Baseball (New York: Ivan R. Dee, 2000), 325.

At any rate, Wynn's birthday and contribution to those late-50s Sox teams inspired me to look up other starting pitchers who made appearances for the franchise during the 1950s. And that is today's Sporcle theme: which pitchers started a minimum of at least 10 games for the White Sox from 1950-1959? In all, there are 29 names: how many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • As noted above: to qualify, a pitcher must have started at least 10 games over the course of the 1950s.
  • I've allotted 15 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I've provided the number of games started, and the tenure of the pitcher in question.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Wynn's K/9 is the highest of the players on this list, at 6.5. (Different time and all that)
  • In 25 games covering 52 plate appearances for Washington in 1946, Wynn slashed .319/.385/.426.
  • Wynn was a 20-game, uh, winner in five different seasons.
