Sporcle Saturday: Opening Day outfielders since 1940

If there’s one outfielder (pictured here sliding for the Hollywood Stars in 1943) with a memorable name you should remember from the 1940s, it’s this one. (Photo credit: Los Angeles Daily News/ Public Domain)

Good morning!

This week, we move beyond the infield and into the outfield, looking at who has manned the 7-8-9 positions on Opening Day over the decades. It’s an interesting list: as the “Useless Information” section notes below there’s been quite a bit of variability over the years, particularly of late.

As this Sporcle covers three positions, it’s going to be a big one: there are 252 entries in all. How many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • I’ve allotted the full 25 minutes for completion attempts.
  • As usual, you get the date of the game and the position, grouped by year.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • No player has started more than 8 times in an outfield position on Opening Day.
  • That same player, does, however, hold the record for most consecutive Opening Day starts. (Right field, 1980-1987)
  • This year will see the 11th consecutive different Opening Day outfield.
