Clubhouse notes from James Fegan

-- When John Brebbia walked into the visitors clubhouse in Kauffman Stadium with his right foot in a walking boot, it seemed bad. When he took the walking boot off and tested his strained right calf out on the field with head trainer James Kruk, it read as a bit more optimistic.

"He’s better today," Pedro Grifol said. "It wasn’t as bad as it was in the spring. We’re still evaluating that one. We don’t have to make that decision for a day or two."

The Jiménez progression (he took BP again Saturday) affirms this is not a foolproof metric, but Grifol affirmed that the team held off on placing Brebbia on the IL because they think he could be available sooner than an IL stint would require.

-- It's not good that we are having discussions about what part of the roster is better to endure being a man down before the eighth game of the season. But generally it's harder to be shorthanded in the bullpen than it is to play without a dedicated designated hitter. The Sox have eight available relievers outside of Brebbia until at least Monday, but their 40-man situation leaves them lacking in quick call-up options.

The White Sox traded Alex Speas to the A's for cash considerations on Saturday, a day after designating the right-hander for assignment to make room on the 40-man for Robbie Grossman. That leaves Prelander Berroa (21.60 ERA at Charlotte, shoulder issues in spring, poor current reviews on his slider from scouts) and Bailey Horn (20.25 ERA at Charlotte) as relievers in Triple-A who are already on a full 40-man roster.

A rehabbing Davis Martin has yet to be placed on the 60-day IL yet, but he represents a 40-man spot that was likely due to be used to add Nick Nastrini, Brad Keller or any other fill-in fifth starter option to the roster.
