White Sox Game Recaps

Guardians 7, White Sox 6 (10 innings): Two Naylors beat one Sheets

The White Sox blew a 5-0 lead for the second straight night. This time they couldn't get away with it.

Josh Naylor and Bo Naylor twice teamed up for big blows. Their homers in the third inning put the Guardians on the board, narrowing the score from 5-3. In the 10th, Josh Naylor tied the game with a one-out double off Bryan Shaw that drove home the Manfred Man, and Bo Naylor's line-drive single to right-center ended it.

They spoiled the best game of Gavin Sheets' career. Sheets went 3-for-5, and all three hits scored runs. He hit an RBI double off Tanner Bibee in the first inning, then blasted a three-run homer in the third. The Guardians then held the Sox in check until the 10th, when Sheets stung Eli Morgan for a leadoff double that briefly restored a lead.

Sheets went 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position, and the exception didn't result in any outs, as he reached on an error when Nick Sandlin handled Sheets' soft comebacker and threw to third in order to get Lenyn Sosa, but the throw handcuffed José Ramírez.

The rest of the team went 0-for-11, with the only other run scoring on Andrew Benintendi's sacrifice steal attempt in the first inning. With runners on the corners and an 0-2 count on Korey Lee, Benintendi broke for second. Naylor threw through,. and Andres Giménez chased Benintendi back to second without looking at Sheets, who scored before the rundown produced the out.

Other opportunities went by the boards before, during and after the Guardians chipped away at the lead. The Andrews were in the middle of it.

Fifth inning: With runners on the corners and one out, Nick Sandlin freezes Andrew Vaughn and gets Benintendi to fly out.

Eighth inning: Vaughn leads off with a double, but Benintendi strikes out, pinch-hitting Oscar Colás grounds out, and Dominic Fletcher strikes out.

Ninth inning: Paul DeJong greets Emmanuel Clase with a pinch-hit double and advances to third on Nicky Lopez's bunt, but Robbie Grossman grounds into a 6-3 double play, and Sosa grounds into a 5-3. DeJong made a mistake of not breaking for home when Brayan Rocchio turned his back on the plate to run to second to start the DP.

Meanwhile, Erick Fedde wended his way through the first three innings in scoreless fashion, but he once again ran into issues the second time through. He gave up a third homer to Steven Kwan in the fifth that made it a one-run game, and then he started the sixth.

It could've gone better, partially because Braden Shewmake booted Josh Naylor's leadoff grounder, but then Fedde walked the next two batters to load the bases. In came Tanner Banks, who struck out Bo Naylor, but plunked David Fry to tie the game before getting the double play to minimize the damage.

Dominic Leone and Deivi García each pitched a welcome scoreless inning to get the game to the ninth, and Steven Wilson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth before Shaw sank in the 10th.
