Another, lesser, pillar of the White Sox's international strategy of paying older Cuban players fell by the wayside on Tuesday. In the process of opening a 40-man roster spot for Jonathan Cannon for an MLB debut that was postponed by rain, the White Sox designated Josimar Cousin for assignment.
Cousin shouldn't have really been on the 40-man roster in the first place because he hadn't done anything to distinguish himself from the standard organizational arm in High-A, but since he was 25 when the White Sox signed him last May and thus exempt from counting against international pool money, the Sox could get more creative with their accounting, and probably with their contract terms as well.
Cuban RHP Josimar Cousin (25) officially signs with the Chicago White Sox. Bonus deal: $ 100,000.

Cousin will also receive 2 million in deferred money: 1.2 M if he reaches MLB between 2023-2025, 625 K if he stays in the Minors. pic.twitter.com/DRtYAYFLkX
Cousin could go unclaimed, because he hasn't pitched yet in affiliated ball. He did make a few decent appearances during spring training, during which broadcasts confused him with White Sox non-roster invitee (and current New York Yankee) Jake Cousins, but he opened the season on Birmingham's injured list.
Cousin joins Yolbert Sánchez and Yoelqui Céspedes as notable Cuban signings the White Sox have released over the last half-season. If you were wondering about Norge Vera, he's on Winston-Salem's 60-day injured list.
