White Sox Minor Keys: April 9, 2024

White Sox outfielder Oscar Colás

Oscar Colás (Laura Wolff / Charlotte Knights)

When Eloy Jiménez got hurt, the White Sox called up an infielder in Lenyn Sosa.

With Yoán Moncada injuring himself running down the first-base line in Tuesday's 7-5 victory voer the Guardians, the White Sox are replacing him with Oscar Colás. I'd say "all's well that ends well," but half the equation ain't.

The move was telegraphed when Colás was pulled from Charlotte's game in Jacksonville in the first inning, and reported by Francys Romero afterward, which James Fegan confirmed.

Colás is off to a strong start with the Knights, going 9-for-29 with a homer, two doubles, and, most remarkably, three walks to four strikeouts. Still, this probably wasn't Chris Getz envisioned as proper, dedicated development time when the White Sox acquired Dominic Fletcher and Zach DeLoach to give Colás actual right field competition this time around, then sent Colás to minor league camp in the first round of spring training cuts.

The question is whether Pedro Grifol plays him as little as possible, fearing that Colás still doesn't have a handle on the speed of the game. The José Rodríguez Treatment is possible in a world where Eloy Jiménez is a week or so away from returning, but there hasn't been any sense that Jiménez is rotating or running like he needs to and Colás is viewed as the most direct answer to a dearth of dangerous bats. I suppose when the move's made official and the lineup cards are out, we'll get an update on the forecast for both.
