The Birmingham Barons effectively erased their six-game losing streak earlier this month by winning seven of their next eight, including a 5-4 victory in 10 innings over Biloxi on Thursday.
In the process, they're back to having the best record in the Southern League on the strength of a pitching staff that has only allowed 119 runs over 41 games, including seven innings of one-run ball from Ky Bush against the Shuckers.
Baseball America has taken notice of the Barons' depth, placing them third among 10 teams in the early running for their Minor League Team of the Year honor.
As we detailed earlier, Birmingham is at the epicenter of the rebirth of the White Sox’s farm system. The Barons’ pitching staff is chock full of high-end arms, including Jake Eder, Jairo Iriarte, Drew Thorpe, Mason Adams and Ky Bush. The team also is about to get a boost from southpaw Noah Schultz, whose pure stuff is among the best in the sport. Birmingham also gets plenty of offense from the likes of Edgar Quero, Brooks Baldwin and Wilfred Veras.
