Rickwood Field

Rickwood Field (Carol Highsmith, Library of Congress Collection)

On Tuesday, the Birmingham Barons will be playing the Montgomery Biscuits in the rebranded Rickwood Classic at Birmingham's historic Rickwood Field, two days before Major League Baseball stages an official game there between the Cardinals and Giants, and the publicity for the showcase is beginning to ramp up.

The Birmingham Barons will be wearing throwback uniforms honoring the Birmingham Black Barons, who shared Rickwood Field with the (white) Barons when both teams were in existence.

Along with the excellent "Road to Rickwood" podcast hosted by Roy Wood Jr., MLB.com has published a couple of articles about the Black Barons -- a quick "Who were the Black Barons?" summary, and a nice article by Matthew Ritchie explaining how Black Barons games were integral to the Birmingham's African-American social fabric.
