The Chicago White Sox needed to score early and often against the New York Mets to snap the seven-game losing streak. Based on Run Differential, the White Sox get worse as the game gets deeper.
- Innings 1-3: -87 runs
- Innings 4-6: -60 runs
- Innings 7-9: -129 runs
Andrew Benintendi continued his hot-ish August, slugging an RBI double in the first inning, giving the White Sox an early 1-0 lead.
The Mets loaded the bases with no outs against Jonathan Cannon in the second inning. After striking out Francisco Alvarez, Cannon got Harrison Bader to hit a grounder at Miguel Vargas to start a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat. Or so the White Sox thought. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza challenged the call, thinking Nicky Lopez didn't keep a foot on second base during the transition. The replay showed that Lopez completed the out at second base, but his return throw to first base was late. The call on the field was overturned, and the Mets tied the game 1-1.
Cannon ran into more trouble in the third inning. Despite picking up two outs, Cannon walked Pete Alonso before allowing a double to Jesse Winker that split the gap between Luis Robert Jr. and Dominic Fletcher. Now up 2-1, JD Martinez followed up Winker's double with a two-run homer, his 16th of the season. Suddenly, the White Sox were down by three runs, which has felt insurmountable this season.
And it was. Not much happened for either the Mets or White Sox after the third inning. Tyrone Taylor made a great diving catch into the right field betting off a Robert Jr. foul ball. In the ninth inning, Francisco Lindor doubled and moved up to third base off Brandon Nimmo’s single. Mark Vientos hit a rocket of a line drive right at Robert Jr. It was deep enough to score Lindor to give the Mets a 5-1 lead.
