The last time the White Sox saw Enyel De Los Santos, they made him wear it, battering him around for six consecutive hits en route to seven runs over 1⅔ innings in their 12-2 victory over the Yankees on Monday.
The next time they'll see him, he'll be wearing a White Sox uniform. They claimed De Los Santos off waivers from the Yankees among four roster moves this afternoon, hoping to turn the rare offensive outburst into a little bit of bullpen depth.
In terms of claiming guys right after beating them up, the White Sox hope it's closer to Hector Noesi in 2014 (166 respectable back-end innings after hanging seven runs in an inning on him to end his Rangers career) than Anthony Ranaudo in 2016 (8.46 ERA after watching him walk five White Sox over 1⅓ innings for, again, the Rangers). De Los Santos was productive enough this season that the Yankees acquired him from San Diego in a minor trade at the deadline, and has two years of arbitration left if the Sox are so inclined, but he was scored upon in three of five outings with New York.
De Los Santos is on the 40-man, taking the place of Mike Clevinger, who was transferred to the 60-day injured list after disk replacement surgery on his neck. He isn't yet on the 26-man roster. Instead, the White Sox recalled Gus Varland from Triple-A Charlotte to replace Steven Wilson, who went on the injured list with a lower back strain as his cursed season continues. The White Sox claimed Varland off waivers from the Dodgers on Aug. 2, and he's thrown 4⅔ walkless innings for Charlotte since joining the organization.
