Sporcle Saturday: decent (or better!) at the hot corner

Good morning!

It's been a rough go of it for Lenyn Sosa this season, no question. Unfortunately, whether you're a fan of the traditional or the advanced metrics, they all tell an equally dismal tale. OPS? .543. OPS+? 54. Okay, well, what about batting average? .216. It all adds up to what is now the worst bWAR on the team, accruing(?) -1.7 over 76 games, 48 of them at third base. Yikes!

While perhaps there is hope coming in the form of Bryan Ramos, it isn't here yet and thus the White Sox will end another season disappointed in what they got out of the third base position whether through injury, underperformance, or a combination of both. It has, in fact, been three full seasons since a White Sox third baseman logged a season of 2+ WAR. Today's Sporcle will look back at those other seasons throughout franchise history where the hot corner provided average or better value. In all, you'll be tasked with trying to name 69 player-seasons. How many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • To qualify, the player must have appeared in at least 50% of their games at third base and logged at least 2 bWAR over the course of the season.
  • I've allotted 10 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I've provided the year and the total bWAR accrued.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • Only a few guys have led the league in notable offensive categories: triples (2018), home runs (1971), and walks (1925).
  • Other categories where guys were leaders: intentional walks (1998), sacrifice hits AND caught stealing (1966), and strikeouts (1902).
  • The only 10 WAR season by a third baseman in baseball history is Al Rosen, with 10.2 for Cleveland in 1953.
