Sporcle Saturday: The opposition blasted off

Good morning!

The other night, Juan Soto made the White Sox pay. As noted in the game recap, Soto's three home runs marked all of the scoring for the Yankees on the evening. In total over those three at-bats for home runs, Soto saw fourteen pitches and swung at four of them. Not too shabby of a batting eye!

Still, three home runs by the same player in the same game is not all that common of an occurrence. The last time an opponent did this to the White Sox was in 2021, and it has happened just seven times this century. Thus, I thought a trip down memory lane might be in order. Throughout franchise history, an opposing batter has tortured the White Sox by hitting three or more home runs in a game on 24 separate occasions. How many can you name? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

  • Seeing as the answers are opponents and we're going all the way back to the roaring 20s, I've allotted 20 minutes for completion attempts.
  • For hints, I've provided the date of the game, the opposing team, and the position(s) the player manned during that game.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

  • The White Sox are 3-21 in such games with the largest margin of victory coming over Cleveland in 1987, 14-9.
  • The largest margin of defeat was an 18-2 blowout at the hands of Baltimore in 1972.
  • The youngest player to accomplish this against the White Sox was 21 years and 200 days, the game on 5/30/1934.
  • The oldest? 39 years and 24 days, on 7/25/2019 (and a player which many of us will remember).
