Pregame Notes: Diving deeper every day

(James Fegan/Sox Machine)

The White Sox are at a franchise record 113 losses and counting. They are riding a franchise record 14-straight home losses and have already clinched the worst home winning percentage in team history.

Their current .125 post-All-Star break winning percentage is also set to be the worst mark in MLB history. They tied the 1916 A's for the worst winning percentage through 146 games in MLB history.

Losing to Cleveland Tuesday night secured the team's 20th-straight series loss, and losing Wednesday will mark the 23rd time they've been swept this season. There aren't many formal records kept for performances in series, but it seems like that's also pretty bad.

Since the Sox are 5-24 under interim manager Grady Sizemore, an upturn in results can no longer be sold. This team isn't good enough to compete for wins on this level on a nightly basis. So the compliments usually center around the nobility of trying to do so anyway, and without turning on each other.

"At this point we're trying to get better, we're trying to finish strong," said Sizemore. "Whatever the record is, is what it is. It's not what we want it to be, whether we hit some magical number or not. It's not a winning a season. It's not the season we hoped for. The goal is to finish the season as strong as we can."

By my calculation (counting), Wednesday is Yoán Moncada's 16th day on a Triple-A rehab assignment (.323/.344/.548 in nine games), which isn't otherworldly seeing as he's missed five months of major league action with an adductor strain. But it would also make Sunday the last day he could be a Charlotte Knight under his current assignment.

Sizemore has repeatedly said he's unsure of the timeline of Moncada's return, but this might be a symptom of the interim manager not being tasked with keeping tabs on rehab assignments, since he probably couldn't rattle off the return dates for Michael Soroka and Steven Wilson either, if called upon on short notice. Still, Chris Getz speaking on Monday didn't get much more specific.

"He’s been responding well, but at this point, we want to continue to make sure he’s in a good spot and he feels good about where his body’s at before we make a decision on bringing him back," Getz said.

Bryan Ramos' first career homer Monday is his only hit in six at-bats since being recalled. But he flew out deep to center, lined out and worked a walk in Tuesday's loss, which would be considered a good night at the plate by his measure.

"Obviously I know I can hit homers but I don’t look for that every at-bat," Ramos said. "I know I’m a power man. I've got power. So if I put consistently good at-bats, the homers are going to come."

While Ramos has done some outfield work this season and showed me his new outfield glove Wednesday morning, Sizemore doesn't anticipate using him there in a game this season while the position remains so new to him.

At last check, the White Sox are a major league team and managing them is a major league job, so Sizemore argues that they shouldn't lack for candidates for his role next season. Sox executives have also claimed they have compiled a long list of potential hires, so we'll see.

"You look at it as an opportunity to take something and improve off of it," Sizemore said. "That’s the way all coaches probably look at it, regardless of what position you’re in. It doesn’t really matter whether it’s a team that’s in first place or last place. You get a chance to be a part of that, it’s something special. That’s why I say, even though we’re struggling and not getting the wins, I’m enjoying it. I get to compete at the big league level every night. This is what you want to do."
