While Yoán Moncada's expiring rehab stint drew most of the attention over the last week or so, Michael Soroka had been approaching the end of his timetable in Charlotte as well. He'd made six appearances dating back to Aug. 27 as he worked his way back from a shoulder issue, so the White Sox would've had to make a yea/nay call by the middle of next week.
They made the decision today, reinstating him from the injured list as one of three roster moves. They made room on the 26-man roster by designating Chad Kuhl for assignment, which also creates a vacancy on the 40-man roster. Jordan Leasure was also reinstated from the IL after his own shoulder issue, but he was optioned to Charlotte.
With the White Sox winning Chris Flexen's last two starts, Soroka returns to Chicago as the poster boy for pitching misfortune. There's the fact that the Sox have lost the last 19 games Soroka has pitched in, but his personal 0-10 record also puts him in rare territory. No White Sox pitcher has finished a winless season with more losses (there's a four-way tie at 0-7, including Nick Nastrini this year), and it'd be the worst individual record in the league since Terry Felton went 0-13 for the Minnesota Twins in 1982.
Kuhl finishes his season with 53⅓ innings over 31 games packed into a three-month window. He gave Pedro Grifol and Grady Sizemore availability and innings, but if the heavy workload took a toll, his 10.29 ERA and 19 baserunners over seven innings in September is what it might look like.
