Good morning!
As Sporcle Master, I regret to inform you that next week's quiz is the one many have both dreaded and long seen coming: your 2024 Chicago White Sox. Gird your loins and prepare for battle: it promises to be quite the house of horrors!
This week, however, is more positive in nature. (Worry not, there will be plenty of dour Sporcles in the months to come, I'm sure!) Though this season's White Sox have been The Worst Ever, they still are able to underscore the unpredictable and random nature of baseball. One way in which that has manifested? With his walk-off single on Wednesday evening, Andrew Benintendi became the first White Sox player to record three walk-offs in a single season since Scott Podsednik in 2009.
A couple of thoughts. First: this franchise has had some decent-to-good-to-excellent offensive seasons the past fifteen years from several different players. I find it humorous that the last player to do it for the Sox had a 97 OPS+ that year, and Benintendi this year sits at a 93 OPS+. Second: if you had told me going into the season that one player would have three walk-offs, I wouldn't have guessed that the overall team record would be, well...what it is.
At any rate, two of Benintendi's walk-offs have been of the dinger variety, which is what today's Sporcle will quiz you on. Since the first recorded walk-off home run for the White Sox in 1914, there have been a total of 158 walk-off bombs. How many can you name? Good luck!
