I spent Thursday night in Birmingham watching the Barons smoke the Tennessee Smokies to force a decisive Game 3 in the Southern League Division Series, and I'll have a few notes later today. To bide our time, here are a couple of notes on White Sox prospects I have seen at various points this year, but not this week:
*Noah Schultz's arsenal gets a detailed breakdown from Sam Dykstra in MLB Pipeline's Pitching Lab series. If you've read James' conversations with Brian Bannister, you already have an idea of how the White Sox are tweaking his arsenal in order to get a little more out of his fastball, but here are the grips, metrics and descriptions all in one handy place. The only thing missing is the four-seamer, which he's returning to after some time away focusing on his sinker.
*Edgar Quero returned to the Charlotte Lineup for the first time since Aug. 13. He'd spent the last month and a week on the injured list due to back tightness, but he DH'd on Thursday and went 1-for-4 with a strikeout.
Charlotte 7, Syracuse 3
- Corey Julks went 2-for-5 with a homer, triple and strikeout.
- Tim Elko was 1-for-4 with a double, walk and two strikeouts.
- Colson Montgomery, 0-for-5 with a K.
- Edgar Quero went 1-for-4 with a strikeout.
- Oscar Colás was 1-for-4 with a double and a K.
- Nick Nastrini: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 19 of 33 pitches for strikes.
Birmingham 12, Tennessee 5
- Rikuu Nishida went 2-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts.
- Wilfred Veras was 1-for-3 with a strikeout, but hurt himself on a steal of third.
- DJ Gladney was plunked in the wrist and struck out before leaving the game.
- Jacob Gonzalez was 2-for-4 with a homer, HBP and a stolen base.
- Terrell Tatum was 3-for-5 with a strikeout and three stolen bases.
- Tyler Schweitzer: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 52 of 77 pitches for strikes.
Notes:
*The series is now tied at 1, with the deciding game tonight in Birmingham.
