A day after he departed his start after three innings, the White Sox placed Martín Pérez on the injured list today with left elbow inflammation, and called up Jared Shuster from Charlotte to take his place.
Shuster was the obvious choice, given that he's a lefty who can throw multiple innings and was already on the 40-man roster, but he helped his own case further by pitching as well as he could expect to perform in Charlotte in six games (11 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 15 K). Scott Merkin says that Shuster, Bryse WIlson, Mike Vasil and Tyler Gilbert will be considered by Will Venable to fill Pérez's spot in the rotation between now and Wednesday.
On the other pitching staff, the Red Sox activated Liam Hendriks from the injured list. He hasn't pitched since June 9, 2023, his fifth and final appearance for the White Sox that season after his stirring return from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Perhaps the reaction from some of his teammates is why the White Sox haven't been allowed to produce a feel-good story since.
