PREAMBLE
I see the Sox being a strong team for several years. In my plan, I'm hoping for progression in the development of Vaughn and Sheets, and solving the hole at second base with a longer term solution.
ARBITRATION-ELIGIBLE PLAYERS
Write “tender,” “non-tender” or “rework/extend” after each player and their projected 2022 salaries. Feel free to offer explanation afterward if necessary.
- Lucas Giolito: Extend: 5/83M. 8M, 15M, 20M, 20M, 20M
- Reynaldo López; $2.8M Tender
- Evan Marshall: rework 2/3M
- Adam Engel: $2.2M Tender
- Brian Goodwin: $1.7M Non-tender
- Jimmy Cordero: $1.2M Non-tender
- Jace Fry: $1M Tender
CLUB OPTIONS
Write “pick up” or “decline” or “rework” after the option.
- Craig Kimbrel: $16M ($1M buyout) Pick up
- César Hernández: $6M Decline, firmly
OTHER IMPENDING FREE AGENTS
Try to retain, extend qualifying offer, or let go?
- Leury García (Made $3.5M in 2021) Retain 2/9M
- Carlos Rodón ($3M) Let go
- Billy Hamilton ($1M) Let go
- Ryan Tepera ($950K) Let go
FREE AGENTS
List three free-agent targets you’d pursue during the offseason, with a reasonable contract. A good example of a bad idea:
No. 1: Kevin Gausman 4 years / 82M. Runs thru age 35 season. 23M, 22M, 20M, 17M
No. 2: Pedro Severino 2 years / 4 million. Back up catcher who can block balls.
No. 3: Hunter Strickland 2 years / 7 million. Steady veteran relief presence.
TRADES
Propose trades that you think sound reasonable for both sides, and the rationale behind them. A good example of a bad idea:
No. 1: Trade 3B Jake Burger, RP Sean Burke, SP Andrew Dalquist to Arizona for 2B Ketel Marte. Arizona is clearly looking to the future and get 3 top 15 prospects, including 2 pitchers, for a young, controllable, productive starting second bagger.
Trade 2: Trade RP Craig Kimbrel and C Zack Collins to Philadelphia for RHP Micah Ottenbreit. Phillies get a chance at a bullpen upgrade and a change of location chance on a former 1st round catcher. Sox get an 18 year old minor league pitcher, wild card.
Trade 3: Trade Dallas Keuchle and 10M cash to Pittsburgh for and low level minor leaguer. Pittsburgh gets a veteran innings eater on the low.
