Sporcle Saturday: Wait, who’s playing at shortstop?

(Photo by Joe Camporeale/USA TODAY Sports)

Good morning!

During Thursday afternoon's loss to the Blue Jays, defensive changes during the late innings led three-quarters of the lineup playing out of position due to the Haseley-Mendick debacle/the neverending plague of soft tissue issues. Seby Zavala moved to first base, Andrew Vaughn moved to second base, and Josh Harrison played shortstop. Oh, and Leury Garcia made the switch from shortstop to center field.

I thought it wasn't all that likely there have been many players in franchise history who've played both first and second base or shortstop and center field. And I was right! Both of those positional combinations haven't happened very often over the years, but the second base-shortstop duet has been played on a more frequent basis. I'll list the other combinations below in the Useless Info section, but today's Sporcle will ask you to name the players who have played both second base and shortstop in a game throughout the history of the team. In all, there are 210 occurrences (don't worry, there are several guys who make up a fair number of said occurrences): how many can you get? Good luck!

Quiz Parameters

    • You don't really need many hints for this one, so I've provided just the date of the game.
    • I've allotted the full 20 minutes for completion attempts.

Useless information to amaze, annoy, confuse, and/or confound your friends and family:

    • The White Sox are 96-114 when this switch takes place.
    • Now, for those other combinations. To play both shortstop and center field, you have: Leury Garcia (x4), Jose Valentin (x4), Lee Richard (x9), Minnie Minoso (x1), Johnny Mostil (x1), and Freddy Parent (x1)...
