Pregame notes: The tarp is on the field

James Fegan/Sox Machine|

Might not be the last time you see this guy tonight.

As these delectable pregame notes were being composed, it was raining and the tarp is on the field. Given the forecast, that might be the situation when they're being read as well, by you, right now.

It could be a long night, and not just because the Blue Jays have won nine in a row, and the White Sox are under .500 by more games than they have wins on the season.

Brooks Baldwin was scratched from the lineup pregame due to lower back tightness, suffered in the weight room per Will Venable. He is still being evaluated, but Austin Slater took his spot in the lineup and on the diamond.

Luis Robert Jr. was activated from the injured list as Tristan Gray's one-day stay on the active roster ended. There's no truth to the rumor that Venable raised his voice while declaring that Robert will have no physical restrictions upon returning from a left hamstring strain, with the goal of talking so loud that the Phillies front office could hear him.

"He's ready to go," Venable said. "I think that that's where we got to with his timing is that he wanted to be in a spot where he could go and be himself and run around the field like we're used to seeing him do. So no limitations from his end. And for me, there won't be any limitations either."

Cam Booser and Davis Martin have headed out to Charlotte to begin rehab assignments. Martin is expected to pitch Wednesday and Sunday to set himself up to return after the All-Star break.

Speaking of Charlotte, that's probably where right-handed reliever Kyle Tyler is eventually headed after the Sox signed him on a minor league deal. He's a 28-year-old with a 4.31 career ERA who has been designated for assignment twice this year already by two different organizations. But he has started in the past, so wouldn't it be something if he started a White Sox game this year before Mike Clevinger and Noah Syndergaard?

⚙️⚙️⚙️

Colson Montgomery might very well start at shortstop for every game of this homestand, but Venable said that there will be days where Chase Meidroth plays short and Montgomery plays third at some point...in the future.

⚙️⚙️⚙️

Tuesday night is only his 10th start of the season, the mechanics and norms of starting pitching in the league has changed dramatically, but Aaron Civale does not have a quality start yet this season. It's never too late to start! Until one day it is.
