A few weeks have passed since the signing deadline for 2024 MLB draft picks, and Carlos Collazo at Baseball America rounded up the bonuses for all 30 teams to see how they money was spent.
As long as you're spending all your money and then some -- and Collazo points out that the Rockies and Twins have never spent more than their draft pool -- there isn't necessarily a wrong strategy, just wrong players, and that usually takes a couple years to determine.
Overages: The White Sox spent 4.6 percent over their draft slot, which is both plenty, but also only good for 18th because 12 teams maxed out at 5 percent. That's only a difference of $55,000, which can be considered money they didn't use on unsigned 20th-round pick Myles Bailey.
Strategy: Because they went over a combined $1.2 million overslot with their first three picks, they lead the "Spend Early, Save Later" group that also features three other AL Central teams (Twins, Royals and Tigers). Mike Shirley wasn't alone in needing to go with college seniors later to pay prep picks earlier, but he might've grumbled the most about doing so.
