White Sox Game Recaps

White Sox 4, Angels 3 (10 innings): Walk-off single staves off history

White Sox win

Welp, Andrew Benintendi made the crowd at Guaranteed Rate Field wait yet another day.

Benintendi's one-out single off José Quijada in the 10th inning gave him his second game-winning hit in as many nights, once again dismaying the portion of the 18,423 fans who showed up to see the White Sox's record-breaking 121st loss.

In truth, neither team deserved to win this game. The Angels grounded into three double plays -- one with the bases loaded in the eighth, and one in the 10th that stranded the Zombie Runner and set up the Sox for success in the bottom of the inning. Zach Neto was also caught leaving early twice, although the box score shows them as the more noble "caught stealing" instead of the less savory "picked off."

On the White Sox's side, they lost two baserunners themselves. One was on a straightforward unsuccessful stolen-base attempt by Bryan Ramos. As for the other, Benintendi ran into a first-inning out after a single because he baited a cut-off of a throw home without realizing that Luis Robert Jr. was given the stop sign at third. Davis Martin walked five batters and plunked another over 3⅔ innings, and was lucky to escape with just two runs allowed, both of which scored on a single Michael Soroka allowed on his first pitch of the night.

Soroka rebounded to throw two scoreless innings afterward, which put him in line for the win after Lenyn Sosa's fourth-inning solo shot gave the Sox a 3-2 lead. Alas, he's still at 0-10 because Justin Anderson loaded the bases with a single, walk and single with one out, after which Gustavo Campero attempted a suicide squeeze.

It's one of Washington's favorite strategies, even though it's ended up like this:

But he was finally rewarded tonight, because it ended up like this:

Jared Shuster, who pitched the scoreless 10th after Fraser Ellard posted a zero in the ninth, took home the victory instead.

The White Sox left a number of opportunities for the Angels to hand them the record-setting loss in the most typical of fashions, but it'll live on until Wednesday. Those hoping to see history will have to call off work, but with the Sox pushing Garrett Crochet back until Thursday to face Detroit, they're trying to meet fans halfway.

Bullet points:

*Benintendi is the first White Sox player with three walk-off hits in a season since Scott Podsednik in 2009.

*The White Sox are no longer winless in Martin starts this year, as they improved to 1-9 despite one of his lesser efforts.

*Sosa and Korey Lee were the White Sox offense in regulation. Prior to Sosa's fourth-inning homer, his double preceded Lee's two-run shot in the second.

*White Sox pitchers allowed nine walks and a hit batter over 10 innings.

*Nicky Lopez, who entered as a defensive substitution after Gavin Sheets pinch-hit for Jacob Amaya in the ninth, started the critical 6-4-3 double play in the 10th with a tricky pick while backpedaling.

*My guess is that Steve Stone has agreed to a deal:
