Pregame notes: Sure are a lot of power-hitting lefties in the opposing lineup

James Fegan/Sox Machine

Statcast rates Rate (ugh, bad writing) Field as the eighth-friendliest ballpark in the league this season for left-handed home runs. Davis Martin has allowed a .456 slugging percentage to left-handed hitters this season, and the five lefties Aaron Boone has written into Thursday night's lineup have combined for an even 100 dingers in uniform for the Yankees this year.

Just something to consider. Maybe it's less emotionally devastating if you see it coming.

Colson Montgomery remains sidelined with left side (ugh, bad writing) discomfort for the second-straight game, and did not take part in batting practice on the field pregame Thursday.

"He can feel it on the field as well, but I think it’s mainly swinging, and again, progressing here and over the next day or two expecting to see more progress and hopefully he’s in there," Will Venable said. "If we continue to be in a spot where we’re short and we don’t think he’s trending in the right direction, certainly that’s something you have to make a move on, because you can’t play short every night. At the same time, we feel good about even without him on a single night, that we have it covered and have enough flexibility with our roster that we feel good about getting through a game."

The White Sox won't be short in the bullpen, as they recalled Cam Booser and optioned Tyler Gilbert. Less than three weeks ago, Gilbert had a sub-3.00 ERA as a versatile left-handed multi-inning relief option. He's allowed 13 hits and 10 earned runs over his last five outings, accounting for 4 2/3 innings, ruining his stat line and earning him a demotion to Charlotte.

Owen White is headed to Charlotte with Gilbert, though he's technically a major leaguer heading out on a rehab assignment for his right hip impingement. As Tim Elko could inform, nothing guarantees that White won't simply being optioned once his assignment expires.

Luis Robert Jr.'s season isn't officially over but Venable sure talked to him like it was.

"Just let him know how much I appreciated what he did for this group this year, and that I know that maybe the bottom line for him as he looks at his offensive stat line is not where he wants it," Venable said. "But you look at the way that he continued to battle through a tough start and got himself in a spot where he was making an impact for us every single day, even though he maybe wasn't where he wanted to be offensively. We talked about just how much I appreciated that, and that obviously the situation is not ideal, but that I hope he reflects on this year thinking that it was a good year and one that he can build off of."
