Pregame notes: Maybe a break can do some good

James Fegan/Sox Machine

The White Sox have scored one run per game over their four-game losing streak. Perhaps relatedly, clubhouse opened to media over an hour later than usual (not by surprise, it was preannounced), which usually aligns with a later mandatory arrival time for players.

"We have to do that and make sure that we're mindful pregame and how we go about it," Will Venable said. "Certainly there's still a lot of work we do pregame to be prepared, it just doesn't show up on the field as much. But yeah, these guys are running on fumes, and at this point of the year your pregame schedule is really tailored to helping them be ready for the game and just conserve energy levels a little bit."

Grant Taylor is available out of the bullpen Tuesday night. It's been tough last few years for White Sox fans. Surely everyone has to appreciate knowing that on this night of baseball, Sox fans aren't the only ones who will be having their groins put to the test.

Colson Montgomery has struck out 15 times in his last 29 plate appearances and has multiple strikeouts in each of his last seven starts. Don't call it a funk.

"He smoked a ball yesterday so if there's a funk, I think he's coming out of it," Venable said. "I thought he had a couple good swings in Cleveland too. I get it, you know, coming off a homer every other day it seemed like, I think it could seem like he's struggling. I think, yeah, he hasn't had the results he's wanted, but he's still in a good spot. Looks good to me, just gotta keep going."

After dealing with left hip soreness in Cleveland, Brooks Baldwin is back in the lineup...by force!

"It’s something to watch," Venable said of Baldwin's hip issue. "We talked it through. He’s not in a spot where he’s going to put himself in more harm. It’s something about pain tolerance. He really fought to be out there. He understands just as [Mike] Tauchman did fight through some stuff, as everyone is fighting through physical stuff. Now is the time to post and be there for your teammates."

Chase Meidroth is riding an 11-game hitting streak, one shy of his season (and thus, career) high, and in turn, is back to leading off.

"He’s been really aggressive," Venable said. "That’s something that we’ve seen him go in and out of. But seeing him be aggressive early in the count with serious intentions, trying to do some damage and get a good swing off, which is great. That’s a little bit of what we’ve been missing the last few days, that early aggression and hopefully he can set the tone for the group today."
