Tyler Schweitzer's regression from the most unsustainable of ERAs carried over into Game 1 of the Southern League Division Series on Tuesday, and in a most painful fashion.
He entered his third inning of work in the sixth inning with the Barons leading the Chattanooga Lookouts 6-0, having allowed just a two-out double over the first two frames. He quickly recorded the first out of the sixth on two pitches, but then all hell broke loose. The sequence:
- Flyout
- Single
- Five-pitch walk
- Five-pitch walk
- Six-pitch walk
- RBI single
- RBI HBP
- Two-run single
Schweitzer departed with a 6-0 lead having been chopped down to 6-5, leaving Adisyn Coffey runners on the corners and one out. Coffey retired both batters he faced to end the seventh, but the first one took the form of a sac fly that tied the game. The Lookouts ended up getting to Caleb Freeman for two runs in the ninth, and the Barons will head to Chattanooga needing to win both games to advance.
Schweitzer's season line is still one to be admired, but it's still incredible how quickly the law of averages can strike somebody down.
